Driveways Built for Utah Winters
Asphalt driveways in Lehi need to handle summer sun, winter freezes, snow shovels and the occasional moving truck. Most failures come from what is underneath: a base that was too thin, soft soil left in place, or water that collects and freezes in the same low spot every winter. When we build or replace a driveway, the base is where most of the effort goes.
Is it time to replace?
- The surface is gray, rough and crumbling, not just faded
- Cracks have joined up into a web pattern
- Potholes come back each spring
- The driveway has sunk near the garage or along a utility trench
- Ice forms in the same low spot every winter
If the damage is limited, crack sealing, patching or an overlay might be enough. We tell you which.
Road base and compaction
We remove the old surface and any soft or organic soil underneath, then place road base in layers and compact each one. Cost guides describe a typical home driveway as 6 to 8 inches of compacted base under 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt, and 8 to 10 inches of base under 3 to 4 inches for heavier vehicles. Lehi's own minimum for a local public street is 3 inches of asphalt on 6 inches of road base. Your quote lists both numbers for your driveway.
Grading for snowmelt
Snow piles up along driveways all winter and melts on sunny days. If meltwater runs across the driveway and refreezes overnight, it leaves ice and works into cracks. We grade driveways so water runs off to the yard or the gutter, and we point out downspouts that drain across the pavement.
Where the driveway meets the curb
Most Lehi homes have a concrete curb, gutter and drive approach in the city right-of-way. We pave up to it cleanly. If you want the approach widened or a new one added, Lehi's design standards require permits for right-of-way work and set spacing between residential approaches. We check the current requirements before planning that part of the job.
First-year care
New asphalt is softer during its first hot summer. Avoid turning your wheels while parked, use a board under trailer jacks and kickstands, and do not park heavy trucks near the edges. HomeGuide recommends waiting 3 to 6 months before the first sealcoat.

Asphalt Driveways Questions
Is 2 inches of asphalt enough?
For cars on a well-built base, 2 to 3 inches compacted is typical. For trucks, trailers or RVs, 3 to 4 inches over a thicker base is safer.
How long will an asphalt driveway last in Lehi?
HomeGuide gives 15 to 30 years with proper installation and upkeep. Sealing and crack filling make the biggest difference in Utah's sun and freeze-thaw.
Can I park on it the same day?
No. Give it a few days, longer in summer heat. We give you timing for your job.
Will de-icing salt damage asphalt?
Salt is harder on concrete than on asphalt, but salty meltwater in cracks still speeds up freeze-thaw damage. Sealing cracks helps.
Do you pave new-construction driveways?
Yes. We pave driveways for new homes once the concrete approach and utilities are in.
