Paving in Fairfield
Asphalt paving in Fairfield is rural paving in a very small town with a big past. Fairfield sits in the southwest corner of Cedar Valley at about 4,879 feet, along State Route 73 west of Utah Lake. Settlers arrived in 1855 and called the place Frogtown. In 1858 and 1859, Johnston's Army came, and nearby Camp Floyd grew to more than 7,000 people, including 3,500 troops. The town was renamed Fairfield in 1861. The Stagecoach Inn, which served stage travelers, soldiers and Pony Express riders, is now a museum.
A big town with few people
Fairfield incorporated on December 20, 2004, and covers about 26 square miles, but it had just 160 residents in 2020. That means long drives, ranch properties and open ground. Paving here is usually a gravel-to-asphalt conversion or a paved apron where a drive meets the road.
Building for heavy use
Ranch drives carry trucks, trailers and equipment. We use a heavier section for those and grade the drive so water runs off. Cedar Valley winters are cold and windy, and summers are dry and sunny, so the base has to stay dry and the surface needs sealing to last.
Paving in stages
On a long drive, it often makes sense to pave the section at the road, where gravel gets dragged onto the pavement, and the area around the house or barn first. We quote it either way.
Permits
SR-73 is a state route. Driveway work in the state right-of-way requires a UDOT encroachment permit, which covers traffic control, insurance, a bond and inspection. For other roads, check with the Town of Fairfield or Utah County. We sort out which applies.
What drives the cost
Out here, price follows the length of the drive, the amount of grading and road base, and how far the trucks haul. We itemize each part in the written quote.
