Paving in Draper
Asphalt paving in Draper covers the far southeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley, just across Point of the Mountain from Lehi. Draper sits at about 4,751 feet, with the Wasatch Range to the east and the Traverse Ridge to the south. Ebenezer Brown brought cattle to South Willow Creek in 1849, and the town incorporated as a city in 1978. It had 51,017 residents in 2020, up 20.7 percent from 2010.
Foothills and valley floor
East Draper climbs into the foothills, where driveways can be steep and long. West Draper is flatter. On sloped lots, we grade to move water off the surface and compact base in lifts. On flatter lots, we make sure water does not pond near the garage.
Winter
Draper winters average roughly 30 to 50 degrees, snow usually falls from November through March, and winters are slightly drier than in Salt Lake City. Freeze-thaw still opens cracks, so crack sealing each fall and sealcoating every few years remain the best protection.
The old prison site
The Utah State Prison operated in Draper from 1951 to 2022 near Point of the Mountain alongside I-15. Its relocation opened a large area for redevelopment, adding to the commercial and residential construction along the corridor. New commercial lots and roads need good drainage and regular maintenance from day one.
HOAs and commercial lots
Many Draper neighborhoods have HOAs with private roads and amenity lots. Commercial areas along the freeway see heavy traffic. We crack seal, sealcoat, patch, overlay and restripe on a schedule that keeps access open.
Permits
Draper City regulates anything in the street right-of-way, so a new or wider approach gets cleared with the city first. State routes require a UDOT encroachment permit.
What an estimate covers
Homes get measured, checked for runoff and probed for soft ground. HOA and business lots also get a map of the failures and a plan for doing the work in phases.
